In December, JR East Urban Planning will open "Asagaya Anime Street (tentative name)" on the land beneath the elevated tracks between Asagaya Station and Koenji Station on the JR Chuo Line.
The site, currently used as a parking lot and partly as a warehouse, covers an area of approximately 2,000 square meters. It is easily accessible from both stations without getting wet in the rain, and is located near a pool and park. Plans call for the street to include a figure workshop, a custom-made cosplay costume shop, satellite classrooms and work experience programs for a vocational school, a store selling character and original goods, a motion capture and editing studio, and a café with exhibition and event space. Construction is slated to begin early this month.
The concept is "the only place in the world where creators and viewers can come together." By providing a forum for connections between creators and viewers, the street aims to expand and deepen the fanbase while also fostering the creation of new works and new creators. The target audience is men and women in their late teens to 40s. Centered around anime, it includes manga, movies, games, novels, and more, primarily in the science fiction, male-oriented, and female-oriented genres, incorporating elements of a cyber-based worldview.
Suginami Ward in Tokyo, where Asagaya Station and Koenji Station are located, is home to approximately 70 of Japan's estimated 200 anime production companies nationwide, including Sunrise, making it the second most populous ward in the country after Nerima Ward. Existing anime hotspots such as Akihabara, Nakano, and Mitaka are also located along the same Chuo Line. Suginami Ward is home to the ward's official anime character, Namisuke, the Suginami Animation Museum, and the Gundam monument in front of Igusa Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line, and actively supports the anime industry.
