Celebrating its 50th anniversary, TAG Heuer Carrera decorates Matsuya Ginza

Jun 4, 2013

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the TAG Heuer Carrera collection, the exterior walls of the Matsuya Ginza store are decorated in TAG Heuer colors until the 30th. Various artworks adorn the exterior walls, including the first and latest Carrera models, brand ambassador Leonardo DiCaprio, the brand's in-house chronograph movement, the Calibre 1887, and the red and green brand logo. The Carrera was a chronograph watch released in 1964 by Jack Heuer, current honorary chairman, who loved and participated in car racing. Its motif is the Carrera Panamericana Mexico, a grueling endurance race covering 3,000 km of Mexico in five days that was discontinued in 1955 due to the high number of fatalities. The first Carrera, a black and white panda edition with a tachymeter, became popular among top European and American racers and has become one of the most coveted chronographs among luxury watch collectors. Heuer then released the world's first patented automatic chronograph, the Carrera Chronomatic Calibre 11, in 1969. The Carrera was beloved by racers such as Ferrari drivers Jacky Ickx, Clay Regazzoni, Mario Andretti, Carlos Reutemann, and Jody Scheckter, and in the 1970s, when Heuer was an official sponsor of the Ferrari Scuderia, Heuer donated a gold Carrera engraved with their name and blood type to every member. Since then, the store has been a favorite of famous racers such as David Coulthard, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, and Alain Prost.

Matsuya Ginza is scheduled to undergo a major renovation and reopen in September.
