Each season, Women's Artistic Director Maria Grazia Chiuri's collection opens the door to original imagination. For Dior's Spring/Summer 2023 women's collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri used an image of a map of Paris from the House's archives*. With this map, she traces her own journey between autobiography and introspection, leading to the Tuileries Gardens, created at the request of Catherine de' Medici. This Italian aristocrat, who joined the French royal family in 1533, symbolized the relationship between women and power. Her political nobility and the innovations she brought to the royal craftsmen—high heels, corsets, and Burano lace—captivated Maria Grazia Chiuri. Corsets, sometimes hidden and sometimes exposed, define Dior silhouettes evoking the wide skirts worn at royal courts. Raffia coats, adorned with floral and bird motifs, are enhanced by a reinterpretation of a Baroque grotto designed by artist Eva Jospin, where contemporary craftsmanship returns to ancestral traditions.
At the heart of this extraordinary production were the dancer-choreographer duo Ilme and Marne van Opstal, delivering a captivating performance that perfectly balanced beauty and disquiet, mystery and virtuosity. A captivating energy that explores the many facets of feminine power.
