An exhibition of exquisite antique lace opens in Kyoto

Event Date:2018.05.18-06.03
May 21, 2018
The "Diane Kreis Collection Antique Lace Exhibition" is running until June 3rd at the "Eki" Kyoto Museum, located inside the JR Kyoto Station building.

Throughout European history, lace has always held great importance. Royalty and aristocrats saw it as a symbol of their wealth and power, but today, the techniques of skilled artisans have largely been lost, and inexpensive machine-woven lace has become the norm.

This exhibition showcases "antique lace," a work of art crafted with exquisite craftsmanship that once captivated Europeans. This comprehensive exhibition, focusing on works from the tens of thousands of pieces in the collection of Diane Kreis, a world-renowned antique lace connoisseur, focuses on lace from the heyday of the 16th to 19th centuries. It goes beyond simple explanations of techniques to explore the motifs, uses, and people associated with lace.

In addition, prior to this exhibition, actress Narumi Yasuda, a huge fan of antique lace, visited the Yokohama exhibition, which ran until May 13th, and commented, "I was left in awe."

Come experience the glamorous image of medieval and early modern Europe at this exhibition.
