Woodworker Ryota Nishimoto's solo exhibition "Outline" will be held from May 26th to June 12th at the select shop "ataW" in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture.

Nishimoto Ryota works primarily in woodwork, but also uses a variety of materials such as PVC pipes, resin, concrete, and paper. He has previously exhibited his works in exhibitions such as "Unit Exhibition" at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT (2015) and "PVC Pipes and Ice Candies" at gallery deux poissons in Ebisu (2014). From "non-melting" popsicles carved from blocks of wood to pudding, sliced apples, potato chips, and Daruma dolls, familiar everyday silhouettes take on new contours through his perspective.

Kawada in Sabae city, Fukui prefecture, is a district that has long thrived as a producer of Echizen lacquerware. This exhibition is being held at "Atau," a shop run by Sekisaka Lacquerware Co., Ltd., founded in 1701 as Sekisaka Yohei Shoten. The shop sells a wide selection of Fukui Prefecture-made products, including original glassware, lacquerware, woodworking studio "Rokurosha," and pottery maker Tanaka Manabu. It also features design products from Switzerland's BIG-GAME and Terayama Norihiko's studio note, as well as a selection of Japanese and international everyday items, clothing, and music CDs. This exhibition, "Outline," marks Nishimoto's first foray into lacquering. Working with lacquer artisans in the Kawada area, Nishimoto has created works using lacquer on a variety of materials, from blocks of wood to pre-made objects like screws, glasses, and even familiar toys. The rich lacquer coating on familiar everyday objects reveals previously unseen contours and invites viewers to discover new charms in traditional crafts.

In addition to the lacquerware works, a variety of other works will be exhibited and sold, from functional everyday items to non-functional objects. Artist Nishimoto will also be in the store on May 27th during the event.
