Marimekko and Moomin... A book unravelling the evolution of Finnish design over 100 years, exhibited in Aichi [NADiff Recommended Book]

May 18, 2017

Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop NADiff. This week's topic is "Finland Design." This is introduced by NADiff Aichi, our Aichi/Nagoya branch (1-13-2 Higashisakura, Higashi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Aichi Arts Center B2F).

■ "Finland Design"

This book is the official catalog for the "Finland Design" exhibition, commemorating 100 years of Finnish independence. Currently on view at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, it will soon travel to the Fukui City Museum of Art (July-September), Fuchu Art Museum (September-October), and Miyagi Museum of Art (October-December).

The book is structured like the exhibition itself, tracing the evolution of Finnish design over the past 100 years through six sections: "Before Independence," "Foundations," "Perfection," "Geniuses," "Leap Forward," and "Now."

Outside of these sections, the book also features contributions by design critic Kashiwagi Hiroshi and Moomin researcher Morishita Keiko about the roots of Finland's way of life and style, which is deeply connected to nature, as well as a Mail Intervew Q&A with the five designers featured in Chapters 5 and 6 (Eero Aarnio, Ishimoto Fujio, Tove Slotte, Harri Koskinen, and Heini-Lee Tahuhta), and a related timeline, making for a rich collection of content. This book provides an overview across genres, including product design, textiles, and illustration.
