MUVEIL's Michiko Nakayama's brand "M" x MEDEL JEWELRY special exhibition! Held in a hidden space at Kanda Myojin Shrine

Event Date:2018.04.20-05.06
Apr 19, 2018
A special exhibition featuring M, the brand created by MUVEIL designer Michiko Nakayama, and mederu jewelry, a jewelry brand from Asakusa, Tokyo, will be held at M from April 20th to May 6th.

M (M)

M is an experimental project in which Nakayama, a Tokyo-born fashion designer, focuses on the "indirect influence" of clothing. She articulates the details of clothing and attempts to value and commercialize the beauty of the by-products and collaboration that derive from clothing in new ways. She incorporates the unique sensibilities of Japanese women into "Western" clothing, selling it in a hidden space within the grounds of Kanda Myojin Shrine, creating a "new Tokyo souvenir of Japanese sensibility." This exhibition marks the first act of the year-long special exhibition "Things I Want to Pass On," which focuses on the act of incorporating and passing on things from different eras, foreign lands, and deeply rooted traditions that catch the eye of everyday life, along with artists and shops that M has encountered. It visualizes and verbalizes the messages embedded in their artwork.

Mederu Jewelry

Mederu Jewelry, our collaboration partner, is a jewelry brand that opened its atelier and store in Asakusa, Tokyo in 2008 and now also has a store in Aoyama. Based on the theme of "nostalgia and beauty," the exhibition offers jewelry that combines designs beloved by modern women with the craftsmanship of classical artisans. Starting with Japanese sensibilities, the company travels across various boundaries, such as East and West, eras and ethnicities, in search of an appeal that never fades over time. Since its founding, the company has continued to create items, carefully crafting each piece, with a focus on made-to-order production.

In this exhibition, by separating the numerous "elements" that make up a single piece of jewelry, clothing, etc. from the work itself and visualizing them, the exhibition listens to the whispers of belief woven by the artisans, and introduces "things we want to pass on" that will stay with us three or ten years from now, even after the passage of time.
