Gucci releases "KAGUYA BY GUCCI," a Japanese short film featuring its bamboo handle bags

Aug 12, 2022

Gucci has released a new story to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its Bamboo Handle Bag. The Bamboo Bag is an iconic Gucci handbag created in 1947 by founder Guccio Gucci and Florentine artisans. This story features actress Hikari Mitsushima, dancer and performer Aoi Yamada, and actor Eita Nagayama. A short film and visuals produced in Japan will be distributed globally.

At the heart of this story is "Kaguya by Gucci," a six-minute short film that offers a modern interpretation of "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," said to be Japan's oldest tale. Bamboo has been used in Japan since ancient times to create a variety of tools. The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is a fantastical tale that begins when an old man, a bamboo cutter by trade, discovers a little princess among the shining bamboo in a bamboo forest. Though created over a thousand years ago, this timeless tale has been read and loved throughout the ages, and resonates with the appeal of Gucci's bamboo handle bags.

Set in modern-day Tokyo, the 2022 version of "Kaguya by Gucci" is a short film directed by Masaru Nagahisa, a breath of fresh air in the film industry, with original music by musician Keiichiro Shibuya. Wearing looks from the Gucci Love Parade collection, the characters rediscover true love and their true selves, while the film depicts the bright and bustling streets of Tokyo, the tranquility of the bamboo forest, and the shining moon in the sky. "Kaguya by Gucci" sheds new light on Gucci's bamboo-handle bags through an original story that weaves Alessandro Michele's eclectic aesthetic with classic Japanese and contemporary landscapes.

Gucci will release the short film "Kaguya by Gucci" today, August 10th, on Gucci.com and on the official Gucci YouTube channel and social media accounts worldwide. In addition, an exclusive behind-the-scenes video of "Kaguya by Gucci" will be available exclusively to friends of Gucci's official LINE account from August 10th to 17th.
