"Tower of the Sun 1967-2018: What Taro Okamoto Asked" Second Session Opens, Tracing the Tower's Regeneration

Event Date:2018.02.21-05.27
Jan 30, 2018
The Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, will be holding the second part of its special exhibition, "Tower of the Sun 1967-2018: Questions Asked by Taro Okamoto," from February 21 to May 27.

"The Underground Sun: Full-Scale Styrofoam Prototype"
Looking back on his footsteps over the half-century since his involvement in the Osaka Expo as a producer in 1967, to the restoration of the tower's interior in 2018, the exhibition captures the thoughts that Taro Okamoto put into the Theme Pavilion/Tower of the Sun. With the full cooperation of Kaiyodo, the champion of the figure sculpting world, the museum has embarked on a miniature 3D model of the Osaka Expo Theme Pavilion. This is an unprecedented attempt to re-experience in 3D an artistic exhibition space that has previously only been seen in photographs.

The second phase will vividly trace the path of restoration through the prototypes and models actually used in the restoration work inside the tower. The prototype of The Sun Beneath the Earth, which will be restored, will also be on display. You can get a glimpse behind the scenes of the restoration project.
