Acne Studios: Character and Individuality Expressed Through Looks [Women's Fall/Winter 2018-19]

Jan 26, 2018

On January 24th, Jonny Johansson's Acne Studios held its Fall/Winter 2018-19 women's collection show at the customs dock along Paris's Canal Saint-Martin. This season, the show shifted from the ready-to-wear collection period to the couture period (Spring/Summer 2018 Paris Haute Couture Collection Week). While last season's inspiration came from Jonny Johansson's friends, especially those unrelated to fashion, this season he was influenced by creative people living far from the city. The basic styling focused on outdoor-inspired layering and warm outfits. Dresses and pants with retro 70s floral motifs were romantic, while trench coats, gown jackets, and biker jackets were seemingly more conventional. However, the floral dresses had raw edges on each pleat, the coat hems had fringe, and the pieces were extremely oversized, all with the kind of volume changes and twists that are so characteristic of Acne Studios.

This also extends to the hand-knitted details, socks, and printed stoles, brilliantly transforming items that would normally be considered unsophisticated into something very current and fashionable. Once again, I was impressed by Jonny Johansson's intelligence this season.
