Lawrence Weiner is based in New York. Since the 1960s, he has consistently referred to his art as "information," and has been interested in language, symbols, and the imagination they evoke.
The new works being shown this time are made up of words such as water, salt water, fresh water, neutron, and graphite, along with related sentences, symbols, and figures. For this exhibition, the gallery prepared multiple Japanese translations of the English text provided by Winner, and after in-depth discussions about the nuances of the translations, Winner selected the Japanese translation that best suited his needs.
Winner's conviction that the essence of culture lies in the inability to fully translate the meanings and images that words and letters carry, can be said to have given rise to this creative process.
