Shimada Foreign Books in Aoyama, Tokyo, is celebrating its 48th anniversary this year and is holding a 48-day sale from the 1st of this month to January 17th as a countdown to its 50th anniversary. All visual books in the store, covering topics such as fashion, art, design, architecture, and cooking, are 20% off.
When Assistant Manager Ohara recommended books for fashionistas, he selected "Schott: 100 Years of an American Original" by Rintaro Tanaka, published this month; "Story Teller" by Tim Walker, released in October; "Fab Gear" (2011), which delves into Beatles fashion; and "You and I" (2009) by Ryan McGinley.
In addition, the racks outside the store and the bargain shelves directly in front of the entrance (both over 50% off) are also on sale. On display are street snapbooks such as "The Sartorialist" and "Advanced Style," as well as a collection of works by Hussein Chalayan, which is currently out of print (as of December 12th).
This is the first time Shimada Books has held a sale at this time of year. The sale is usually held in early autumn and February, and there was no sale last year. They are currently planning an event related to the number 49 for next year's 49th anniversary.
