Shibuya Stream, a new large-scale facility on the former Toyoko Line site, will open on September 13th! What stores will be located there?

May 24, 2018
As part of the "Former Shibuya Station South Block Project," a large-scale complex called "SHIBUYA STREAM" will open on the south side of Shibuya Station on September 13, 2018.

Shibuya Stream Exterior
Tokyu Corporation

Shibuya Stream's business concept is a "holy land for creative workers," and it will include offices, a hotel, commercial facilities, an event hall, and other facilities to support a variety of work styles. The exterior, with its light, random-panel facade that blends seamlessly into the city, was designed as a symbol of the south side of Shibuya Station, representing the near future of Shibuya. To enhance the visibility of pedestrian flow, escalators, elevators, and other traffic lines are painted a vibrant stream yellow. The "Urban Core," a new atrium traffic space that connects the second basement floor to the second floor, overcomes Shibuya's unique valley topography and provides a direct connection to Shibuya Station above and below ground.

Development of the area around Shibuya Station is currently underway, with the creation of a pedestrian network toward the south side of Shibuya Station. Aiming to eliminate the division of the city caused by the Metropolitan Expressway Route 3 Shibuya Line and National Route 246, multiple new "Urban Core" elevators and escalators that run from underground to above ground are planned, and portions of the second basement floor to the first floor have already been opened to the public since December 2, 2017.

The second floor, where the old Toyoko Line Shibuya Station platform was located, will be the main access point, connecting to Shibuya Station via a deck crossing National Route 246. The deck crossing National Route 246 will reuse the viaduct of the old Toyoko Line Shibuya Station, and is planned to recreate the station building's iconic kamaboko roof. The deck will also connect to the "East-West Free Passage (planned for the future)" on the third floor. Access will be further improved in the future with the construction of the "JR Shibuya Station South Ticket Gate (tentative name) (planned for the future)."

Promenade along the Shibuya River
The facility is located on the former site of Shibuya Station on the Toyoko Line, which was moved underground in 2013. The former Toyoko Line tracks will be developed into a 600-meter promenade extending towards Daikanyama, creating two plazas on either side of the Shibuya River, which has been revitalized through public-private partnerships. The plaza facing Shibuya Stream's Grand Staircase and Inari Bridge will serve as the gateway to the area south of Shibuya Station, overlooking the Shibuya River, and will be the venue for various events, presentations, and promotions. The plaza facing Konno Bridge will host a market, beer garden, and local festivals.

The first to third floors are the commercial zone, with a total floor area of approximately 3,000 square meters and roughly 30 sections of space housing stores based on the timeless concept of "Shibuya style = Shibuya custom." Of these, one store will be making its Japan debut, 13 stores will be in a new business format, and seven stores will be opening in Tokyo or the Shibuya area for the first time. The first floor, which blends in with the plaza along the Shibuya River, is themed around "Riverside Market" and consists of five stores, including Mexican restaurant "Bokkoku Kaitentoriryori," which is opening its first branch in Tokyo from Osaka, and popular restaurant "THE GREAT BURGER STAND," which is leading the hamburger boom. The second floor, themed around "Shibuya Custom Street," where street-level shops line the streets, is home to 15 stores, including "MEAT TAVERN Nikomi-ya Shibei," a new business by Shuichiro Kimura, who is behind the French bread specialty store "Maison Kayser," "BaKING SHU," and "bar vin croisé," a French restaurant where you can enjoy authentic French food in tapas-sized portions in a fully open kitchen. The third floor, themed around Shibuya Court, will be home to the Japanese debut of XIRINGUITO Escriba, a seafood restaurant serving Barcelona-style paella produced by Transit General Office. The building will also house nine other establishments, including specialty Japanese restaurants and open-style eateries.

Shibuya Stream Excel Hotel Tokyu will open on the fourth and ninth to thirteenth floors. Based on the concept of "A hotel that stimulates the senses from Shibuya to the world - THE SHIBUYA SENSIBILITY," the hotel will offer 177 guest rooms, primarily aimed at foreign tourists. The hotel lobby on the 4th floor aims to be a casual, lively hub of interaction, combining a lobby lounge with a bar and dining area called "TORRENT," complete with a large screen. The 177 guest rooms, located on the 9th to 13th floors, are designed with a "vintage modern" concept and feature creative spaces with carefully selected furniture, including a "Fashion Cloak" wardrobe inspired by the apparel shops of Shibuya, the mecca of fashion culture. Reservations will begin on June 1st.

Also, on the 4th floor, a new cafe, tentatively named the "Cycle Cafe & Multipurpose Plaza," will open, promoting a healthy work style. The building supports bicycle commuting and provides a place for people to relax and socialize through hobbies. The multi-purpose space on the lower floors offers a comfortable plaza where people can easily exercise and refresh their bodies and minds, even in the early morning or late at night. It can also be used for events.

Floors 14 to 35 are the largest office areas in the Shibuya area, boasting approximately 2,100m2 (approximately 45,000m2 of total rentable floor space). It offers flexible office space to meet diverse needs. It also ensures direct access to the office from the driveway and boasts high-level specifications, including backup power provided by city gas, for business continuity in the event of a disaster. Google G.K.'s headquarters are scheduled to relocate to all office zones in 2019, and the area is expected to further evolve as a stage for the birth of new, world-leading businesses and cultures.

The adjacent hall will serve as a leading entertainment venue in Shibuya, home to a concentration of live music venues, hosting live concerts and other programs on weekends. Boasting a standing capacity of approximately 700 people, its special space with a glass exterior and two-story foyer is also ideal for business purposes such as new product launches and fashion shows. Reservations are already being taken on the website (http://stream-hall.jp/) for use from October 1, 2018.
