"Decoration is Fluctuation," where seven artists including Yoshikazu Yamagata confront the "present state of decoration," is currently being held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum.

Event Date:2017.11.18-2018.02.25
Dec 11, 2017

The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum is holding an exhibition titled "Decoration never dies, anyway," from November 18th to February 25th, focusing on decorations that have always existed alongside humanity.

Wim Delvoye, "Untitled (Tire)," 2007, Studio Wim Delvoye, Belgium

Originating from funeral rituals and magical tattoos, decoration has survived, sometimes becoming a mere formality but repeatedly evolving and taking on new meaning over time.

This exhibition brings together a diverse range of works by artists of all ages, nationalities, and genres, including a dump truck adorned with Gothic ornaments, a carpet remixing patterns from various cultural spheres, and paintings that imagine the lives and personalities of the people who live within the walls of windows. The seven participating artists are Wim Delvoye, Nynke Koster, Makiko Yamamoto, Yoshikazu Yamagata, Akiko and Masako Takada, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, and Kour Pour.

When we see these artists' attempts to juxtapose completely different eras and values, imagine worlds that do not actually exist, and interpret the "decoration" in everyday life, we will realize that the act of decoration is a necessary trump card for recognizing raw reality in all its complexity.
