From December 22nd, Ginza Maison Hermès Forum will be hosting "Greenland: Fujiko Nakaya + Ukichiro," an exhibition by internationally acclaimed fog artist Fujiko Nakaya and her father, Ukichiro.

Artist Fujiko Nakaya was born in Sapporo in 1933. After her early painting career, she joined E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology), an experimental group formed in New York in 1966 with the aim of promoting collaboration between art and science. Since unveiling his "Fog Sculptures" using artificial fog at the 1970 Osaka Expo, Nakaya has made a name for himself as a "fog artist," creating environmental sculptures, parks, installations, and performances around the world using artificial fog. His father, Ukichiro Nakaya, a leading Japanese experimental physicist, laid the foundations of snow and ice science. He began researching snow crystals in 1932 and, in 1936, achieved the world's first successful artificial creation of snow crystals. Known for sayings such as "snow is a letter from heaven" and "you can't understand ice unless you ask the ice," Nakaya's approach of discovering scientific truth through collaboration with nature continues to have a strong influence on his daughter, Fujiko, who continues to explore the medium of fog in artistic expression. This exhibition, titled "Greenland," references the place where Ukichiro devoted himself to snow and ice research in his later years. Nakaya will be conducting an indoor "fog experiment" using glass blocks from Ginza Maison Hermès as a representation of an icy land. The exhibition will feature a variety of works that combine the talents of these two artists and their curious and adventurous spirit, including Fujiko Nakaya's new work "Glacial Fogfall," as well as photographs taken over different periods in Greenland and various parts of Japan. Visitors can enjoy a dialogue that spans generations between these two artists, who observe and record the ever-changing nature and environment, and view the process of its restoration as a major undertaking in itself.
