Wacoal opens Kyoto machiya accommodation facility featuring Minagawa Akira, designer of Minä Perhonen

Nov 9, 2017
Wacoal will open "Kyoto Ondokoro," a lodging facility renovated from a traditional Kyoto machiya townhouse, in the Okazaki area of Kyoto at the end of April 2018.
The facility's concept is "a moment where each trip feels like a deep breath in your life." By providing a place to connect with Kyoto's culture, environment, and community, the lodging offers a sense of relief from everyday life, the liberation of travel, and a special experience. The lodging aims to become "another everyday life" for guests. Furthermore, while utilizing the value and characteristics of the traditional Kyoto machiya, a type of architecture that characterizes Kyoto's urban landscape, the lodging has been renovated as a living space where modern life coexists, creating a place to connect with the diverse cultures and communities that live in Kyoto, providing an even more memorable stay experience.

The overall direction of the facility, including naming, concept setting, and renovation plans for the townhouse, was handled by Akira Minagawa, designer for the fashion brand minä perhonen, and Yoshifumi Nakamura, architect who also works as a residential and furniture designer. Artist Michiharu Mochizuki and designer Nobuhiro Yamaguchi were involved in the logo creation and communication design.

Prior to the opening, a talk event featuring directors Akira Minagawa and Yoshifumi Nakamura will be held on November 30th at Lounge Uncle Hat in Omotesando, Tokyo. The talk will include an overview of the accommodation business, a discussion between Akira Minagawa and Yoshifumi Nakamura, a Q&A session, and current plans for "Kyoto Ondokoro," which envisions a new form of Kyoto stay that relaxes the five senses. Participation in the talk event is limited to 20 people; if there are a large number of applicants, a lottery will be held.
