Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of art bookshop NADiff. This week's recommendation is Shibusawa Tatsuhiko's "Shibusawa Tatsuhiko Tamatebako." It's introduced by NADiff modern, a branch in Shibuya, Tokyo (Bunkamura, 2-24-1 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).

■ "Shibusawa Tatsuhiko Tamatebako" by Shibusawa Tatsuhiko
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Shibusawa Tatsuhiko's death, and numerous publishers have published related books and re-edited versions of his work. This book is a collection of 99 essay fragments carefully selected from Shibusawa's entire oeuvre. Shibusawa described his literary talent as "aphorism-type," best suited to writing one- or two-page pieces such as recommendations. Most of the 99 pieces are short, just one or two pages long. These short fragments allow readers to appreciate the essence of his "Draconia World," a world he named after a dragon. This is a perfect introduction to Shibusawa Tatsuhiko. The book's editor, Azuma Masao, is exactly 30 years younger than Shibusawa Tatsuhiko and is the last generation to have worked with Shibusawa. He is the former editor-in-chief of the magazine "Fantasy Literature" and has been involved in numerous Shibusawa-related books. It is a moving coincidence that such an editor compiled this anthology at the same age Shibusawa was when he died.
You'll be sure to be drawn to the works selected by the editors, who understand Shibusawa's true essence, and to the entire book in which they are collected. The titles of the works and the titles of the books included are listed at the end of each sentence, providing a starting point for expanding and deepening your understanding of this new world.
As the preface states, "The title, 'Ecrin,' is a French word meaning a small box (such as a jewelry box) for holding something precious." As the preface explains, the book is filled with 99 enchanting, sparkling jewels of words.
The "Belgian Genealogy of Fantasy" exhibition is currently being held at Bunkamura The Museum. Works by Ensor, Delvaux, Magritte, and others beloved by Shibusawa are also on display, so be sure to check it out.
