"MUJI vs. Maywa Denki" exhibition currently underway, showcasing the differences between tools useful in daily life

Aug 9, 2017

The exhibition "Comparing MUJI and Maywa Denki: An Attempt at Nonsense Measurement" is running until August 27th at ATELIER MUJI on the second floor of MUJI Yurakucho in Tokyo.

The exhibition, which is being held in cooperation with Maywa Denki, an art unit produced by Tosa Nobumichi, compares tools with the same functions made by the two companies, MUJI and Maywa Denki, and interprets the "nonsense" (unconventional) structures found in electronics products using MUJI as the standard.

Tosa Nobumichi, President and CEO of Maywa Denki, left the following message about the exhibition: "MUJI and Maywa Denki. Both companies make a variety of tools. For example, they have some products in common, such as electrical extension cords, but because the development processes of the two companies are different, even the same cords can have completely different mechanisms and shapes.

Maywa Denki's product development process starts with Tosa Nobumichi's artistic inspiration, and by giving shape to this inspiration using engineering techniques, they have created many 'nonsense' products that go beyond common sense. However, because their starting point is art, some of their products are so strange that they will make you scratch your head.

On the other hand, MUJI's catchphrase is 'Cheap for a reason,' and we have developed products that are cheap, good quality, and provide the basic necessities of life in the way that they are needed."

As humans live their lives using many tools, let's ask the questions, "Who on earth thinks about these tools, how do they make them, and what kind of people use them?" and consider the Japanese sensibilities towards tools that lie within both companies.
