"Julie and the Shoe Factory," a French musical film reminiscent of Jacques Demy's classics "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "The Young Girls of Rochefort," will be released at Shinjuku Piccadilly, Cine Switch Ginza, and other theaters from September 23rd.
Julie, a 25-year-old living in a rural town, is unemployed, broke, and without a boyfriend. She finally wins a job at a luxury shoe factory, but the factory faces the threat of closure due to the effects of modernization. Julie and the female shoemakers fight back, armed with their red shoes, nicknamed "Fighting Women." This is a story about women becoming independent. Reminiscent of Jacques Demy's classics "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "The Young Girls of Rochefort," this colorful, pop, and chic musical film is a must-see.
The directors of "Julie and the Shoe Factory," Paul Karolyi and Kostia Testu, are a hot topic among young filmmakers who were nominated for Best New Director at the 2017 Palm Springs International Film Festival. This marks their feature debut. Pauline Etienne, with her charming, round eyes and ever-changing expressions, gives a brilliant performance as the protagonist, Julie.
The film is set in the French city of Romans, a region famous for its high-quality shoe production. The film pays close attention to detail, including the use of locally made shoes and shoeboxes. You'll find yourself captivated by the meticulous placement and color of the shoes and clothes, as well as the coquettish French dancing and singing performed by real dancers.
