Nobuyoshi Araki's comprehensive collection of works, "Photo-Mad Old Man A," is the official catalogue for the exhibition currently being held in Shinjuku. [NADiff Recommended Book]

Jul 13, 2017

Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop NADiff. This week's recommendation is "Nobuyoshi Araki: Photo-Mad Old Man A." It's featured by Gallery 5, our Shinjuku branch in Tokyo (3-20-2 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo Opera City Tower, 3F).

■ "Nobuyoshi Araki: Photo-Mad Old Man A"

Nobuyoshi Araki has been active at the forefront of photography as one of Japan's leading photographers since the 1960s. At age 77, a major exhibition featuring over 1,000 new works born from his endless passion for photography is currently being held at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. This book is the official catalog for the exhibition.

The pseudonym "Photo-Mad Old Man A," also mentioned in the title, was chosen by the artist himself in reference to Katsushika Hokusai's "Painter Mad Old Man Manji," and the two artists' lifelong commitment to their creative endeavors naturally overlap. The catalog is just as substantial as the exhibition itself, containing over 500 works, including a precious early work, "The Greengrocer's Man," compiled in a scrapbook. We hope you will also enjoy the exhibition to see how "life and death," a long-standing theme of the photographer's, is portrayed in his work at the age of 77. This catalog is the culmination of the work of a photographer who has explored the realm of "death" through photography.
