Swiss luxury complicated watch brand Pierre Deroche announces new watch with complicated annual calendar mechanism

Jun 5, 2022
Osawa Shokai Co., Ltd., the exclusive import agent for Pierre DeRoche, a luxury complicated watch brand based in Switzerland, is pleased to announce that it will begin importing and selling two models of the Grand Cliff Annual Calendar, a new product for 2022, from June 2022.

Pierre DeRoche, based in L'Heureux in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland, co-founder Carole Dubois recalled her grandfather teaching her as a child that she could remember the long and short months of the year simply by looking at the ridges and valleys of her hand. The simple answer to that complex question inspired the idea for the Grand Cliff Annual Calendar, a new addition to the brand's collection.

In 1980, a now-defunct brand introduced what was perhaps the world's first annual calendar for a wristwatch. This feat was achieved by Dubois Dépraz, a complication specialist in the Vallée de Joux. Forty years later, Dubois Dépraz and Pierre Deroche have combined their expertise to reinvent this delicate complication in a more refined form. Known as a practical complication, the annual calendar is one of watchmaking's most iconic symbols of sophistication. It also represents the magic of simplifying everyday life.

Sixteen years after the launch of the original Grand Cliff, two new models join the collection. True to the Grand Cliff aesthetic, these slightly slimmer diameters maintain the series' impeccable sophistication and elegance. Offering both simple men's and elegant women's watches, the Grand Cliff Annual Calendar collection further highlights Pierre Deroche's reputation as a complication specialist.

Three Types of Watch Calendars

Watch date mechanisms can be broadly categorized into three levels of complexity.

The simplest calendar requires five corrections per year, whenever a month has less than 31 days. Annual calendars accurately display 364 of the 365 days and only require correction once a year, on March 1st. And, considered the pinnacle of watchmaking, the perpetual calendar accurately displays the date year-round, including leap years.

The Grand Cliff Annual Calendar and Grand Cliff Millédie Annual Calendar, equipped with a Dubois Dépraz module, allow for quick date adjustment via the crown and quick month adjustment via the corrector pusher. The 32mm diameter mechanism, which allows for a large date disc, allows for ample date display and ensures easy readability of the annual calendar.

Grand Cliff Annual Calendar: Essential Elegance

Pierre Deroche's new Annual Calendar is a new addition to the Grand Cliff family, following on from the collection launched in 2005.

Thinner and slightly reduced in diameter from 42.5mm to 41mm, the Grand Cliff Annual Calendar's new case features a rounded shape and lug design based on aesthetic codes, perpetuating a sense of perfect poise and refined elegance. The shaded black dial with silver applied indexes and a velvet-like background perfectly highlights the annual calendar complication. A generous date window is located at 3 o'clock, and a red disc beneath the dial displays the month indicator at 7 o'clock. The gray-stitched Cordura strap lends the Grand Cliff Annual Calendar a classic, contemporary elegance.

The Grand Cliff Milady Annual Calendar: A Protest of Femininity

Pierre Deroche has developed a feminine version of the Annual Calendar that proudly asserts femininity while showcasing delicate mechanical flair. Using the same Dubois Dépraz module as the men's model, the Grand Cliff Millady Annual Calendar boldly embraces ornamentation traditionally associated with women. The bezel is set with diamonds, and the exquisitely crafted silver-plated dial features a date window at 3 o'clock with radial decoration and black lettering on a white background. The month display at 7 o'clock features a heart-shaped counter. The display can be read using a disc and second hand in the same burgundy color as the leather strap.
