The "Image Makers" exhibition, featuring Jean-Paul Goude and other creators who create new images across fields and categories such as painting, design, film, fashion, stage art, and photography, is running from July 4th to October 5th at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Roppongi, Tokyo.
The exhibition is directed by Hélène Kermaschter, formerly a curator at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain. The exhibition features Goude as the centerpiece, along with other artists who share Goude's spirit, including Jun Miyake, Robert Wilson, David Lynch, Noritaka Tatehana, and photographer Hal. The exhibition features photographs, illustrations, drawings, sculptures, and video installations.
Jean-Paul Goude, the focal point of the exhibition, uses Gallery 2 of the main gallery to express his imaginary world. The highlight of the exhibition is a mechanical sculpture in the center of the venue, featuring dolls modeled after Goude's three worshipped goddesses, Grace Jones, Farida, and Karen, dancing to the music of Jun Miyake. Other exhibits include a video installation that recreates a Galeries Lafayette advertisement from the Paris subway using 16 connected monitors, and the "Morphological Modification" photo collage series, in which bodies are transformed by cutting and taping together photographs. In Gallery 1, Noritaka Tatehana exhibited shoes, geta sandals, and plasterwork and acrylic sculptures inspired by human anatomy, along with the patterns, tools, leather, and dyes used to make the heelless shoes that Lady Gaga wore and attracted worldwide attention. He also revealed a glimpse of the production process. Large hairpins are also on display in the gallery and courtyard, and a corner for trying on heelless shoes is set up in the basement lobby. Robert Wilson's "Video Portraits" series, which captivate viewers by adding subtle movement to photographs, is making its Japan debut. David Lynch, known for his work as a film director, is exhibiting 24 lithographs depicting the inner workings of human nature, including dreams and nightmares. Photographer Hal captured the power of attraction between a couple by placing them and objects that connect them, such as sneakers, inside a futon compression bag, then removing the air and photographing the three-second period when the bag was vacuum-sealed. At the press preview, Kermaster said, "The title of the exhibition reflects Goude's creative process. I hope visitors can sense how artists from different fields share common perspectives and methods in creating new things." Goude also said, "Along with the three goddesses, Issey Miyake is also a source of inspiration for me. I also have a work that pays homage to him."
