Franck Muller releases the "Tonneau Curvex 30th" to commemorate the brand's 30th anniversary

May 23, 2022

The Swiss mechanical watch brand Franck Muller celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2022. Franck Muller, a genius watchmaker known by various complimentary nicknames, including the "Master of Complicated Watches," first launched his eponymous watch brand in 1992. Despite being a young latecomer to the world of Swiss luxury watches, which is crowded with established brands, Franck Muller quickly rose to become one of the top brands. Still boasting unshakable status and popularity, Franck Muller remains an ongoing legend in the Swiss watch industry, with its namesake watchmaker still at the helm.

The model commemorating the anniversary year is a simple three-hand watch. Franck Muller, the "master of complicated watches," did not create a complication for the commemorative model for this milestone year, but instead gave it a precious symbol. The guilloching on the surface of the dial of this watch is "Damier," a checkerboard-like mesh pattern. This unfamiliar guilloching holds a special meaning for Franck Muller.

In the past, Franck Muller has used this Damier pattern on two limited models for only one year. These special models in Franck Muller's history are the Imperial Tourbillon and the Tonneau Curvex Tourbillon Minute Repeater, both created in 1996. In these two watches, Franck Muller shaped the tourbillon cage in the shape of three swords, one at the front and one at the back. This represents the constantly moving sword's role in exorcising demons and protecting the owner from misfortune, and embodies the essence of Franck Muller's philosophical watchmaking, which layers allegory and narrative with complex mechanisms. Furthermore, the Tonneau Curvex Tourbillon Minute Repeater was a groundbreaking model that incorporated a minute repeater operation indicator into the Tonneau Curvex Tourbillon. These monumental watches have only ever been given the Damier pattern.

The 30th anniversary model, the Tonneau Curvex 30th, unearths this precious history. This watch, which is not a tourbillon, is a special watch that revisits the "story of the tourbillon and Damier pattern," which is important to Franck Muller. The legendary "Damier," which has not existed for the past quarter century, is brought back to life once again.
