Romeo Jennings, Artistry Director at MAC, which designs makeup for numerous collection shows for renowned brands, visited Japan. We spoke to him about this fall/winter's makeup trends.

--Natural makeup, almost no makeup at all, seems to be trending for AW 2014-15. Do you have any tips?

Skin should look healthy and bring out each person's unique personality. To achieve this kind of makeup, it's important to prepare your skin well. There's a primer series called "Prep Prime," so I recommend using that to prepare your skin. I think this trend will continue for a while.

--Skincare is also important.

M.A.C. Lightful Softening Lotion is perfect for smoothing skin. The light texture of the emulsion-type "M.A.C. Lightful Moisturizer" leaves skin feeling incredibly smooth. These are essential items to use before applying makeup. Be careful, as heavy textures can ruin your makeup!

In Asia, where temperatures are high and humidity are high, oil control and balance are especially important. Darker skin has thicker skin, which makes it more prone to shine and makeup breakdown, so oil control is essential. Also, lighter and thinner skin is prone to dryness, so moisturize well.

--What is your impression of Japanese women's fashion and makeup?

I used to think they were very cute, but recently I've seen them as not only cute but also sexy. It's wonderful that they can balance these two elements well. More and more Americans are taking inspiration from this aspect of Japanese people and adopting it. By the way, I lived in Japan for about five years in the 1980s. (In Japanese) "I love Japan!"

--What colors suit Japanese women?

First of all, regardless of skin tone, cool colors like blue and lavender purple make skin look fresh. Purple, plum, and orange are especially recommended for Japanese people. Even if you have flat facial features, blending these colors well can make your skin look three-dimensional.

Also, which colors suit you depends on your skin tone and hue. For example, even if it's the same pink, try experimenting to see if a bluish pink or a yellowish pink suits you better. I think that's where you start.

--Which M.A.C collection has left the biggest impression on you?

There are so many to choose from, but recently, the collection you collaborated on with the New York fashion brand Proenza Schouler was really beautiful and left a lasting impression on me.

--What inspires your makeup for shows?

Every season, M.A.C visits over 200 brands backstage. Sometimes we're inspired by the brands and their designers, and sometimes we give advice to the designers. At M.A.C, we consider makeup to be an integral part of fashion. We work together with the designers to make the shows a success.

--The jacket you're wearing today has a unique design. I heard you aspired to be a fashion designer, but what are your preferences when it comes to clothing?

I'm skinny, so it's hard to find clothes that fit me. That's why I buy ready-made clothes and then modify them myself. For the jacket I'm wearing today, I cut the sleeves off, took them apart and pinned them together. The only brand that suits me is Rick Owens. I love their skinny jeans and jackets.
