The Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery will host the "Swiss Design" exhibition from January 17th to March 29th.
This exhibition commemorates the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Switzerland. It brings together a variety of items that have been exported from Switzerland to the world, including railways, aviation, watches, shoes, furniture, and fabrics, and explores their history and ideas from a design perspective. In particular, the exhibition will explore the ideas and philosophies of two of Switzerland's most iconic designers, Max Bill and Le Corbusier, providing an insight into the rationality and universality inherent in Swiss design.
The exhibition also features works by eight leading Swiss brands, including Bally, Victorinox, Swatch, USM Modular Furniture, and SIGG. A rich archive will also be on display, featuring valuable materials such as posters and original design drawings. The exhibition will also focus on "Swiss Typography," which is heavily influenced by Bauhaus and abstract painting, and the works of Swiss Design Award winners, with works by representative designers from each category on display.

A total of four gallery talks will be held during the exhibition, starting with "Le Corbusier and Swiss Design" on January 25th. Guests include Misa Hayashi of Taisei Corporation Gallery and design director Koichi Yanagimoto, and the talks will provide a useful insight into the origins of contemporary Swiss design, from its origins to its cutting edge.
