G-Star RAW launches new art platform "The Art of RAW" to create artworks using recycled denim materials in collaboration with young designers

May 9, 2022

Since its founding, G-Star RAW has been creating denim art pieces, with art and design in its DNA. In 2022, the brand will launch a new art platform called "The Art of RAW," collaborating with internationally award-winning design talents such as Teun Zwets, Athena Gronti, Lenny Stöpp, Hozan Zangana, Nienke Sikkema, Iwan Pol, and Pien Post.

Talent of the Future

With a view to pushing creative boundaries, G-Star RAW collaborates with a number of young creators to create entirely new art objects. In line with the brand's policy, each artist is free to experiment and upcycle denim waste, creating unique works in their respective fields.

Teun Zwets
The first designer to participate was Teun Zwets (born 1992). He graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2020 and was awarded the Kaserne Prize. What is astonishing is the speed at which he begins his creative process. Following his motto of getting started first, the object he created in conjunction with "The Art of RAW" is "Denim Living." Starting with a chair prototype, I created a base metal frame, then layered denim scraps one by one to increase strength. Finally, I used a binder to solidify the fabric. The finished piece of furniture is a unique art piece that combines a lamp, cupboard, and chair.

"I still remember the moment I received the offer from G-Star. Having never worked with denim before, I was excited to see what the finished product would look like. I believe experimenting and trying new techniques is an essential process for my growth. And now, through communication with denim, I have created the unique furniture piece "Denim Living."

Over the course of a year, various young designers will collaborate on projects each month. They will explore various artistic avenues, including glass art, textile design, sculpture, and ceramic art, utilizing denim, G-Star's core material.

Denim Knows No Limits
With a strong commitment to craftsmanship, G-Star continues to explore the infinite possibilities of denim. Over the years, various abstract denim art pieces have been created, including the "RAW Denim tutu" created for the Dutch National Ballet during lockdown.

The collaboration between Teun Zvets and Art of RAW was announced on April 12th. Every month, a new collaboration will be launched on the G-Star RAW social media channels.
