The Mori Art Museum in Roppongi (Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, 6-10-1 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo) will reopen on April 25th. Details of the reopening have been announced ahead of the grand opening.
After approximately four months of renovations, the 52nd and 53rd floors of the Mori Tower, which houses the Mori Art Museum and related facilities, will be completely renovated and reborn as a new, multi-purpose art space.
According to the renovation manager, the 53rd floor art space will feature a new ceiling that can accommodate heavy hanging works and equipment, thin movable panels, and a neutral white floor with minimal color reflection, making it more suitable for contemporary art exhibitions. In addition, a new space for the "MAM Collection," a permanent exhibition of collection works, has been created, and a new space equipped with glass partitions and projectors has been added to the exhibition room.
The commemorative exhibition "Simple Forms: Where Does Beauty Come From?" (until July 5th) will be held on the opening day. A collaborative exhibition between the Centre Pompidou-Metz, a branch of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Fondation Hermès will be touring Japan, featuring popular works by the Senkai and Enku Buddhas, exclusive to this Japan exhibition. This will be a great opportunity to check out the revamped exhibition space. Also, on the 52nd floor, the Tokyo City View observation deck will be renovated into a new gallery, the Sky Gallery, and the museum shop will feature a large bookshelf and a new product lineup. A collaborative café and restaurant are scheduled to open in late May, making this a must-see new leisure spot this spring. While the globalization of contemporary art has long been a hot topic, the Mori Art Museum has made innovative proposals that overturn conventional art museum concepts, emphasizing "modernity" and "internationality," as well as a vision of "Art & Life" that incorporates contemporary art into everyday life. The current renovation work is thought to place particular emphasis on realizing the Mori Art Museum's philosophy of "Art & Life," not just optimizing the viewing environment for artworks, but also enhancing the views - one of the museum's selling points - and improving the dining and drinking spaces.
Mori Art Museum Director Nanjo Fumio said, "We take pride in having been a catalyst for people to incorporate art into their lifestyles. We would like to continue to broaden the scope of art, and make the Mori Art Museum a museum where everyone can find enjoyment and discovery."
Closing days and opening hours may vary depending on the exhibition and facility.
