On September 4th, the BMW i Megacity Studio, a showroom embodying the world of BMW i, will open across from Toranomon Hills.
BMW i is the premium brand of BMW, the core brand of the BMW Group. The brand's products and services are characterized by their innovative approach to providing sustainable next-generation mobility through dedicated design, development, and planning.
To date, the purely electric BMW i3 (4.99 million yen, 5.46 million yen with range extender) and the BMW i8 (19.96 million yen), a premium sports car equipped with a plug-in hybrid system, have both been on sale since 2014. According to BMW Corporation (President and CEO: Peter Kronschnabl), the reason for opening the showroom in the Toranomon area, which has been gaining attention due to urban development in recent years, is to "further promote BMW i." To allow more people to experience the appeal of BMW i, the showroom will offer test drives of the BMW i3 and car-sharing services. The BMW i Megacity Studio itself also reflects the future, advanced technology, and sustainability of mobility advocated by BMW i. For example, the solar panels on the building's roof are used not only to charge BMW i cars but also to power the facility. Another key point is that the unique BMW i design philosophy is incorporated into the design of the BMW i Megacity Studio, from the layout to every single material used. Eucalyptus and olive trees are planted at and around the building's entrance; in fact, the BMW i3 uses leather tanned with oil extracted from olive leaves, which would normally be discarded.
A reception party was held on September 1st to commemorate the opening of the BMW i Megacity Studio, where guests were seen climbing into the BMW i3 and BMW i8 to experience their driving comfort. Keiichiro Shibuya and Yasuyuki Takagi also participated as DJs at the event, illuminating the venue with cutting-edge sounds reminiscent of the world of BMW i.
The BMW i Megacity Studio is open from 10:00 to 20:00 and is closed on Mondays. Test drives and car-sharing services are scheduled to begin in October.
