Louis Vuitton announced that its 2023 Cruise Collection will take place on May 12, 2022, at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, a suburb of San Diego, California. Continuing its architectural journey, Louis Vuitton will present its Cruise Collection in some of the world's most magnificent buildings. For Women's Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquière, each building serves as a source of inspiration. Previous venues for the show include the Bob and Dolores Hope Estate in Palm Springs, California, designed by John Lautner [KK1] in 2015; the Niterói Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), designed by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in 2016; the MIHO MUSEUM in Shiga Prefecture, designed by I.M. Pei, and the TWA Flight Center at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, designed by Eero Saarinen, both in 2017.

Completed in 1965, the Salk Institute was designed by renowned Estonian-born American architect Louis Kahn in collaboration with founder Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the world's first safe and effective polio vaccine. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Salk Institute embodies the pinnacle of modern architecture, featuring a Brutalist design that combines bold lines with meticulous scale. Considered one of the most significant architectural landmarks in the United States, the Salk Institute is an independent, nonprofit research facility that brings together world-renowned scientists to make game-changing discoveries in areas such as aging, cancer, neuroscience, immunology, and climate change.
The Salk Institute is not only an architectural and scientific landmark, but also an important part of Louis Vuitton's journey. It served as the setting for the 2019 travel campaign and was featured in "The California Issue" in "LV The Book #10," a booklet introducing the House's history and latest news. It remains a timeless reference and source of inspiration for the House.
Women's Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquière said, "Having lived in California, I had a strong desire to hold a show here. For me, the Salk Institute has always been a place full of surprises and discoveries, and Louis Kahn's magnificent Brutalist architecture, set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and California sunsets, provides me with endless inspiration. At the same time, it is a place that celebrates intellect, knowledge, and faith in the power of science."
Michael Burke, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton, said: "Louis Vuitton's longstanding relationship with the United States dates back to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Since then, we have expanded our presence across the country, primarily in California. The beautiful, art-like setting and contrast with the surrounding landscape make it the perfect location for this year's Cruise Collection show."
Louis Vuitton's Cruise Collection will be the first fashion show to be held at the Salk Institute. The courtyard, surrounded by two beautiful, mirrored concrete buildings, serves as the centerpiece of the complex, which combines 29 independent scientific facilities (totaling more than 410,000 square feet) with nature, sky, and sea.
The 2023 Cruise Collection will be livestreamed on louisvuitton.com and on its official social media channels.
