Atwood, who has been based in Paris since the 1970s, was interested in the people photographed by American photographer Diane Arbus, and has produced a variety of series of works driven by her curiosity in an attempt to understand people living in a "closed world."

©CHANELSince her first body of work, photographing prostitutes on the streets of Paris in 1976, Atwood has spent many years photographing people who face and survive the hardships they face, including visually impaired children, female prisoners, landmine victims, and AIDS patients.
Atwood is interested in the concept of social exclusion, and she enters into worlds that many of us are unaware of or choose not to see. The images he captures of harsh reality are direct yet sensitive, never coming across as cold or exploitative.

Photographer Jane Evelyn Atwood ©CHANELThis is Jane Evelyn Atwood's third visit to Japan, 27 years after her visit immediately after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995. "Once I've completed a work, it no longer belongs to me. My only hope is that my photographs can move people's hearts. This exhibition will not be organized in the traditional way, such as by series or chronological order. I want to shine a light on each of my subjects and feel their soul, mine, and theirs. Sometimes I feel that taking photographs will not achieve anything. But I still have to do it."
