On September 12th, Lacoste unveiled its Spring/Summer 2016 collection. The theme for this season was the Olympics. Following on from its involvement in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Lacoste will also be providing the official uniforms for the French Olympic team in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Artistic Director Felipe Oliveira Baptista studied Olympic Games from the 1930s to the present and combined them with the brand's archives to create a stunning blend of sporty and sophisticated urban styles.
The most striking element of the collection is the graphic design, featuring various national flags. The collection's striking features include reinterpreted motifs created by scrapping flags and unique camouflage patterns. The combined flags also express Lacoste's values of universality and diversity.
The color palette combines the primary colors of blue, white, and red, common to France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia, with the yellow and sky blue of Sweden. The collection primarily features cotton piqué, knitwear, and jersey, combined with airy, light nylon, while the lightweight suit jackets are made from Japanese crepe cotton, which is as thin as paper. Technical materials are also essential, such as parachute nylon, which is used for the silver emergency blanket and army green safari dress. The collection explores functionality alongside design, with the pilot jumpsuit quickly unzipped to transform into a loose-fitting coat. The dress can be cinched at the waist to change shape, and the trench coat and nylon windbreaker can be transformed into capes by fastening the shoulder straps, making them versatile pieces.
