An exhibition of photographer Tomasz Gzobaty will be held, exploring the beauty of the unpredictable aging of Polaroids. Steidl will also be visiting Japan.

Jun 21, 2016

"Tomasz Gudzowaty, PROOF," an exhibition focusing on the unpredictable chemical reactions of instant photography, will be held from June 25th to July 1st on the basement and second floors of SPEAK FOR in Daikanyama, Tokyo.

The exhibition features a series of works featuring instant photos made with Polaroid Type 55 film, owned by Polish photographer Tomasz Gudzowaty and considered a by-product of the photography process. Polaroid Type 55 was a black-and-white film enthusiastically loved by large-format photographers but is no longer in production. When shooting, this film produced both a negative and a positive instant photograph, which could be used to confirm the image before printing. While the image appears sharp immediately after being taken, over time, unpredictable and accidental chemical reactions slowly unfold, resulting in unexpected changes to the image. This exhibition focuses on the artistic qualities of instant photography, including its distinct characteristics from photographs printed from negatives. It offers an opportunity to experience the changes over time and unexpected delicate beauty of instant photographs, which are imperfect and sometimes under- or over-exposed, resulting in scratches and blurred images. This exhibition is presented in partnership with Steidl, a German publisher renowned as one of the world's leading art publishers, and its founder, Gerhard Steidl. A photo book of the same title, produced by Steidl, will also be published in conjunction with the exhibition. The exhibition is scheduled to tour worldwide, with Tokyo being its first international showing. To commemorate the exhibition, Tomasz Gzobaty and Gerhard Steidl will visit Japan and hold an opening reception (open to the public) at the exhibition venue on June 24 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. A book signing event will also be held on the 5th from 7:30pm to 9pm on the 1st floor of Daikanyama T-Site Building 2.
