All four volumes of Choju Giga are on display at the Tokyo National Museum, showcasing Japan's oldest anthropomorphic art

Dec 27, 2014

The Tokyo National Museum will hold a special exhibition, "Choju Giga: Treasures of Kyoto's Kosanji Temple," from April 28 to June 7, 2015. This special exhibition will bring together all four volumes of the National Treasure "Choju Jinbutsu Giga." In addition, portions of the scrolls will be presented as hanging scrolls, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the world of Choju Giga. Other exhibits include cultural assets and Buddhist art from the Kosanji Temple collection in Kyoto, where the Choju Giga is said to be a part of the temple's history. One of these, the "Kegon Sect Founder's Picture Book," is designated a National Treasure. Additionally, a sculpture of a beloved puppy by Myoe Shonin, known as the founder of the temple's revival, will be a valuable resource for learning about the temple's history.
