Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Fiona Tan's solo exhibition, "Fiona Tan Ascent," will be held from July 18 to October 18 at the IZU PHOTO MUSEUM in Clematis Hill, Shizuoka. Born in Indonesia to a Chinese father and an Australian mother, Fiona Tan spent her childhood in Australia before studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. She is currently a professor at the University of the Arts Kassel in Germany. Her work has been exhibited at numerous international exhibitions, including the Yokohama Triennale (2001) and Documenta 11 (2002), and she was represented in the Dutch Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Her most recent solo exhibitions include "Depot" (2015) at the Baltic Sea Centre for Contemporary Art, Newcastle, UK. His current exhibition, "Geography of Time," is being held at the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Contemporary Art in Luxembourg. He has had three major solo exhibitions in Japan: at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2013), the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka (2014-2015). His first feature film, "History's Future" (2016), was nominated for the Tiger Award and Golden Trailer Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. This exhibition centers around his new work, "Ascent," featuring Mount Fuji, and includes several works on public display for the first time. Created specifically for this exhibition, "Ascent" is based on approximately 4,000 photographs of Mount Fuji submitted by members of the public and the IZU PHOTO MUSEUM collection. It consists of a two-part video installation and a photographic installation.
Please note that this exhibition will begin with a screening of the video work Ascent, so please make sure to check the screening time before visiting. Seating is limited and if the venue is full you will have to stand, so advance reservations are accepted. For more details, please visit the official IZU PHOTO MUSEUM website.
