Hirama Itaru's photo studio, Hirama Photo Studio TOKYO, will open in Mishuku, Tokyo on January 18th. Hirama is known for his Tower Records poster series, "NO MUSIC, NO LIFE." His photographs capture the true faces of artists not seen on stage, and his works, which convey a new side of their appeal, have garnered popularity. He has also made it his life's work to photograph the Butoh dancer Tanaka Min's "Baodori" ("Baodori") performance, and in 2013 released the photo book "Taikyou" ("Taikyou") featuring actor Ayano Go. From the opening until the end of March, the studio will host a collaborative project with Tower Records, the "NO MUSIC, NO LIFE? Photo Exhibition." This exhibition commemorates the release of the photo book, "DOCUMENTARY PHOTO & MESSAGE OF 'NO MUSIC, NO LIFE?'," and will feature original prints and posters of works featured in the magazine. Furthermore, until February 15th, the exhibition will be titled "NO MUSIC, NO LIFE? EAST," and thereafter "NO MUSIC, NO LIFE? WEST," showcasing works by artists from both eastern and western Japan. Talk shows with invited guests will also be held.
In addition, every Sunday in March, a "NO PHOTO, NO LIFE? Commemorative Poster Photo Session" will be held. Limited to 30 groups per day, participants will be photographed alongside the event's original frame, and the photos will later be made into B3-sized posters.
Under the theme of "photographic renaissance," Hirama Photo Studio TOKYO aims to preserve silver halide photographs for future generations as a way to pass on memories. Aiming to revitalize Tokyo's photo studio scene, the studio will offer commemorative photos for weddings, funerals, and family portraits, as well as photoshoots inspired by the "NO MUSIC, NO LIFE" poster photo session. Furthermore, the studio space will be open to music and other activities, with plans for various future events.
