■ "COWBOY KATE & OTHER STORIES" by Sam Haskins
South African photographer Sam Haskins. As a freelance commercial photographer, he established what was essentially the first photography studio in Africa and has continued to work to this day, taking on a wide range of projects, from fashion to still lifes and aerial photography.
First published in 1964, his work "Cowboy Kate" is considered perhaps the first artistic black-and-white photography book of the 20th century and was a huge hit, selling over one million copies at the time. The limited edition first edition has led to skyrocketing prices among collectors, and the director's cut version, published by Rizzoli in New York in 2006, is already out of stock. This work is a Japanese-English co-published by Doyosha and photographer Sam Haskins, faithfully recreating the original 1960s edition in every aspect, including composition, typography, and book design, with the exception of a smaller paperback format, which makes it available at a lower price.
It continues to influence fashion photographers such as Nick Knight, film directors, fashion designers, and stylists, and is also popular with women. It is a legendary book that can be said to be a pioneer of stylish nude photo books.
