
On January 7th, an attack occurred in Paris on the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo, a political weekly magazine known for its cartoons. More than a dozen people were killed or injured, including editor-in-chief Stephane Charbonnier and the magazine's renowned cartoonist, Cabu.
In response to this attack, large-scale vigils and demonstrations have been taking place across France since the evening of the 7th in memory of the victims. In the fashion industry, designers Nicolas Ghesquière, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Riccardo Tisci, as well as editor Carine Roitfeld and magazine publishers such as Vogue Paris and GQ France, have posted "JE SUIS CHARLIE" ("I am Charlie") on social media such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, calling for freedom of speech.
Charlie Hebdo is a French weekly newspaper founded in 1970. Using radical cartoons, he has been conducting investigative reporting on the situation in France, various religions, politics, etc. In 2011, he published shocking cartoons about the Fukushima nuclear accident, which became a hot topic in Japan as well.
