[Summer Holiday Shaved Ice Special] Mandarin Oriental Tokyo - The ultimate shaved ice to finish off your course meal

Aug 17, 2014

Have you found your favorite from our editorial team's "Summer Vacation Shaved Ice Special"? To finish off the day, we have a supreme dessert that can only be enjoyed by those who order a course meal at K'shiki, the dining restaurant located on the 38th floor, the top floor of Mandarin Oriental Tokyo.

K'shiki's greatest appeal is its "simple yet high-quality" Italian cuisine at "low prices." Lunch courses start from 2,900 yen, and dinner courses from 5,500 yen, so it's recommended for those who think "Mandarin is out of reach..."

After enjoying a choice of main dishes, such as colorful appetizers, hearty pasta, and sautéed pork loin or sea bream, the dessert that comes after is "Almond Milk Granita with Cherry and Mint Scent," a cool and refreshing shaved ice (granita) available only during the summer. The syrup, the lifeblood of shaved ice, is based on "orzata," a children's drink made with almond milk and almond syrup. Orzata is incredibly popular in Italy, and Keshiki's Italian head chef, Daniele Carson, says his mother often made it for him as a child. The ice is made from frozen orzata crushed into a sorbet, allowing the flavor to infuse the ice perfectly. Black cherries in syrup, placed at the bottom of the cocktail glass and on top of the granita, add a touch of tartness. The mint, left whole (not crushed), adds a touch of visual appeal and flavor, creating a sophisticated finish that's not just sweet. The mellow, gentle flavor of orzata and the refreshing mint spread smoothly throughout your mouth, leaving a clean aftertaste. You'll definitely feel the summer in your mouth with just one bite!
