Gallery Le Bain in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo, will host "Windsor Department 03," an exhibition dedicated to the Windsor chair, opening on September 9th. This is the third exhibition by the Windsor Department group, which studies the anonymous Windsor chair, a practical chair for the common people that originated in the Windsor region of England in the 17th century. Three members of the group will be participating: Yasuji Fujimori, who primarily works in furniture design, collaborating with architects, and product and spatial design; INODA+SVEJE, a design team consisting of Kyoko Idota and Danish designer Nils Sveje; and DRILL DESIGN, a design studio consisting of Yusuke Hayashi and Yoko Anzai. The exhibition will feature 10 Windsor chairs created by each designer to date. The exhibition will also feature sketches and models created during the design process, from extracting elements of the Windsor chair to creating a new chair, as well as Windsor chair-related materials collected by each member. An open reception will be held on the 9th at 6:00 PM, followed by a gallery talk on the 13th at 4:00 PM. This exhibition, featuring the Windsor chair, a favorite of LOEWE's new creative director, Jonathan Anderson, is a must-see.
The Windsor Department began its research in 2011, consciously exploring the reasons for the designers' attraction to the form and presence of the Windsor chair. The aim was to collect "Windsor-ness" in various ways and connect it to their next designs. In December 2011, the venue itself was used as a research room to exhibit each designer's first attempt at a Windsor chair in its current form. In February 2013, a new chair was exhibited alongside a rug currently in development, focusing on the "appearance" of the Windsor chair.
