TAG Heuer Announces the Aquaracer Professional 200: A Versatile Luxury Tool Watch

Jan 27, 2022

Swiss luxury watch brand TAG Heuer unveiled the new Aquaracer Professional 200 at LVMH Watch Week. With the Aquaracer Professional 200, TAG Heuer breathes new life into the Aquaracer Professional collection. This bold, stylish, and versatile luxury tool watch continues the rich tradition of high-performance sports watches that the historic Swiss manufacture started 40 years ago.

The Aquaracer Professional 200 is available in 40mm and 30mm stainless steel cases. Both models feature a 12-faceted unidirectional rotating bezel, are water-resistant to 200 meters, and are available with either a mechanical automatic or quartz movement. The Aquaracer Professional 200 is a robust and sophisticated tool watch for life's challenges.

"The Aquaracer is in every respect an iconic TAG Heuer timepiece, alongside the Carrera and Monaco. Its design codes, established decades ago, and the philosophy behind them remain timeless and ever-appealing. This spirit is particularly evident this season, as we embark on a new journey. The Aquaracer Professional 200 is the ideal companion for everyday adventures, achievements, and important moments. It will support you as you push yourself beyond your limits in a fast-paced life," said Frédéric Arnault, CEO of TAG Heuer.

A New Chapter: The Aquaracer Professional Story Continues
Last year, TAG Heuer breathed new life into the Aquaracer saga with the Aquaracer Professional 300, the brand's ultimate luxury diver's watch.

The story begins in 1978, when Jack Heuer introduced the Heuer Reference 844 watch. Designed for men and women who love outdoor sports and adventure in nature, on land and sea, this watch established a new high-performance category of versatile wristwatches built to withstand the harshest conditions.

The family, which added the Aquaracer name in 2004, continues to this day with its six design codes: unidirectional rotating bezel, screw-down crown, water resistance to over 200m, luminous indexes, sapphire crystal, and double safety clasp.

The Aquaracer Professional 200 is designed to be as comfortable for speed flying and ice skating as it is for walking around town. Like its larger 43mm counterpart, the Aquaracer Professional 300, it adopts these six design codes established more than 40 years ago.

This new timepiece is refined in every way. The larger of the two models, measuring 40mm in diameter and 11mm thick, offers a slimmer, sleeker silhouette compared to the previous generation's 41mm diameter and 12mm thickness. TAG Heuer's design and engineering teams have created a more refined and durable model while maintaining the essence of the Aquaracer.

Looking at the Aquaracer Professional 200, you'll see the tool watch design that TAG Heuer fans have come to expect from past icons like the 844, 1000, and 2000 series models, making it an everyday watch. This model is an evolution of the brand's history.

Aquaracer Professional 200 and 300
The differences between the Aquaracer Professional 200 and Aquaracer Professional 300 are immediately recognizable. Both models feature a new version of the now-famous 12-faceted bezel, first introduced in 1995. Both also feature horizontal lines as decoration on the dial and shorter lugs that are engraved, beveled, then satin-finished and polished. Both models also feature a three-row bracelet, a dodecahedral faceplate, and a protected screw-down crown.

However, if you look closely at the details of these two models, you'll notice small but clear differences that give the Aquaracer Professional 200 its distinctive character and versatility. For example, the Aquaracer Professional 200 is designed with a more compact 40mm diameter (compared to 43mm for the previous model) and is also available in an even smaller 30mm case. The bezel still features a minute track, but this model is made entirely of metal rather than a ceramic insert. The center links of the bracelet are polished rather than brushed, giving the Aquaracer Professional 200 a more formal feel. It's a watch that's suitable for the beach, the mountains, the office, and even weekend getaways.

The matte finish accentuates the design. The contrast between the vertical brushed and polished finishes on the case is subtle, but it creates a slimmer appearance.

Differences can also be seen in the details of the dial. While the Aquaracer Professional 300 featured octagonal hour markers, a large hour hand, and yellow details, the Aquaracer Professional 200 features slender trapezoidal hour markers, sleek sword-shaped hands, and refreshing white details. To ensure dial legibility, the hour markers and hands are still coated with Super-LumiNova. However, to maintain a clean design, no luminous paint is used on the bezel.

A look inside the watch: choice of movement, diamond setting, and new case back design
The new Aquaracer Professional 200 offers a choice of movement. The 40mm model offers two automatic and two quartz movements, while the 30mm model offers two automatic and five quartz movements. This is a major difference from the Aquaracer Professional 300, which was only available with automatic movements.

Your choice of quartz or automatic movement will also affect the layout and features of the watch. The automatic models feature a smoky gradient dial, a date window, SuperLumiNova hands, and a finer minute track. The quartz models, on the other hand, lack a date display and have a simpler appearance than the automatic models. However, the rest of the design and functionality are the same.

"For both the automatic and quartz models, we explored the theme of elegance with a thinner bezel, longer indices, and more pronounced markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock. It's a design that exudes class and refinement, more suited to a suit than a street-style watch. That's why we paired the automatic model with a smoky dial," says Product Director Guy Bovet.

The 30mm model offers an even more playful and elegant option. In addition to the three quartz models with light silver, light blue, and black sunray-finish dials, there is also a quartz model with a diamond-studded white mother-of-pearl dial and another quartz model with a white mother-of-pearl dial and a diamond-set bezel. The automatic models, on the other hand, feature diamonds on two dials: a smoky blue and a black dial. Again, the automatic model features a date window.

The case back design is common to all the new Aquaracer Professional 200 models. Embodied as a fearless, adventurous spirit, the case back features a compass pattern instead of the diving helmet that has adorned the Aquaracer (and its predecessors) since 2002. The background of this pattern features a repeated hexagonal motif, just like the case back of the 300 model.

Technical innovations across the collection
Though not immediately obvious at first glance, the new Aquaracer Professional 200 retains technical advances that first appeared in the Aquaracer Professional 300. For example, improvements to the Aquaracer Professional 300's bezel have been carried over to its sister model. The bezel rotation mechanism is extremely smooth, yet the audible click it makes when under water pressure is reassuring and a testament to its sophisticated engineering.

Both watches are presented on elegant, slim bracelets that, once again, demonstrate a commitment to ergonomics, naturally following the curves of the wrist. The flexible and durable Aquaracer Professional 200 bracelet features a 7mm extendable comfort link and a beautifully designed push-down and pull-release mechanism for quick adjustment.

The bezel facets of both Aquaracer Professional series models are fluted to prevent slipping during operation. The Aquaracer Professional 200 bezel eliminates the rider tabs from the previous generation, providing a seamless, smooth look.

As a result, both Aquaracer Professional series models offer a refined feel and aesthetic, delivering a pleasing experience that will impress you with every use. Though tool watches, these models understand the mission of luxury goods. With over decades of experience and new design research this season, we have been able to bring this mission to life.

Special Campaign for the Aquaracer Professional 200
To tell the story of the Aquaracer Professional 200 to the world, TAG Heuer has once again collaborated with director Thierry Donard, known for the extreme sports film series "A Life of Extremes." The visuals focus on sports such as speed flying, skiing and ice climbing, capturing athletes wearing the Aquaracer Professional 200 on their wrists as they boldly take on the world's most challenging natural environments.

Aquaracer Professional 200: Dedicated to Explorers
The new Aquaracer Professional 200 is the next step in TAG Heuer's iconic tool watch series. While it is positioned as a sister model to the Aquaracer Professional 300 within the Aquaracer Professional family, it has a unique design in which every detail has been rethought to give it a sporty and versatile personality. Its refined, harmonious and imposing appearance is the result of many years of work by TAG Heuer's design and technical teams.

A total of 11 references are being released, all crafted from stainless steel. Whatever the case size or details, these bold and dynamic watches are at home in ice climbing, speed flying, and urban life in the world's most cosmopolitan cities. Each model undergoes rigorous testing at TAG Heuer's La Chaux-de-Fonds Manufacture for precision, water resistance and resistance to abrasion, and the bracelet is also tested to ensure it can withstand accidental impacts. The Aquaracer Professional series is all about performance under pressure.

Designed and built for life's greatest adventures, the Aquaracer Professional 200 opens a new chapter in the TAG Heuer story.
