From March 8th to April 8th, the bookstore and gallery "Books and Modern" in Nogizaka, Tokyo, will be hosting a photo exhibition titled "Another Landscape" to commemorate the publication of "Shoji Ueda Collected Works" (16,000 yen/Kawade Shobo Shinsha).
Ueda Shoji, a photographer based in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, has continued to present a playful world of photography throughout his life. His staged photographs, featuring sand dunes as a backdrop, are filled with humor, surrealism, and polyphony, and in the 1970s he gained a solid reputation in France and other European countries, to the point that the term "Ueda-cho" became a universal language.
The exhibition will feature original gelatin silver prints of "Another Landscape," which focuses on the beauty of fleeting moments captured by Ueda. Also, as special events during the exhibition, there will be a talk event titled "Ueda Shoji in Magazines" by photography historian Kaneko Ryuichi from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm on March 11th, and a talk event on the theme of "Who is Ueda Shoji?" by photography critic Iizawa Kotaro from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm on April 1st (2,000 yen each/drink included).
