Swiss luxury watch brand TAG Heuer will launch three new models in the TAG Heuer Autavia collection in 2022. These new models feature a flyback chronograph and, for the first time in the Autavia collection, a three-hand GMT.
TAG Heuer is releasing three new models in homage to the legendary Autavia collection, which was launched in 1962. The Autavia collection features a complication and two new chronographs, and the in-house Calibre Heuer 02 COSC Flyback is being used for the first time. Additionally, the Calibre 7 features a new three-hand GMT movement, a first for the Autavia.
The Autavia watch collection, the first product launched under Jack Heuer's leadership 60 years ago, combines the two pillars of TAG Heuer's history: AUTomobile (Automobile) and AVIAtion (Aviation). Originally used for dashboard timers in cars and aircraft from 1933 onwards, the name Autavia was adapted for watches as TAG Heuer's interest in timepieces grew.
With the new in-house Calibre Heuer 02 COSC flyback movement, TAG Heuer has further enhanced its appeal to its past. Flyback is a feature not often seen in chronographs due to its difficulty in implementation, but it allows the chronograph hands to be reset and a new measurement started without stopping the chronograph, saving valuable time in pressure situations such as setting a lap record on a race track.
The release of these two flyback chronographs also pays further homage to TAG Heuer's rich history.
In the late 1960s, Heuer was most closely associated with an order from the German Bundeswehr. The 1550 SG model, still highly sought after among collectors today, was specially created as a flyback chronograph for the German Air Force, meeting the specific requirements of its pilots and renowned for its ease of use and reliability.
The 2022 model features the instantly recognizable chronograph pushers and large crown, both of which are inspired by TAG Heuer's historic dashboard timers. Another feature that has made TAG Heuer chronographs so popular is their legibility. Here too, TAG Heuer has stayed true to its DNA, coating the hour markers and hands with Super-LumiNova for quick and clear reading. This model also takes inspiration from the historic Autavia collection, model 73663. It also features a dial variation with large luminous Arabic numerals.
A distinctive feature of the Autavia DNA: the bidirectional rotating bezel and sapphire crystals front and back, enhancing the durability and practicality of TAG Heuer's new Autavia Chronograph.
Of the two chronograph models, one pays homage to the rare panda dial, produced in extremely limited quantities in the 1960s, and features a silver dial and polished steel case. The other, an Autavia Flyback model, features a black dial and DLC-coated case, establishing a direct connection to past military models.
The third model celebrating the Autavia's 60th anniversary is powered by the COSC-certified Caliber 7 (Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute). The all-new three-hand GMT Autavia is the collection's first complication, perfectly configured for lovers of road and air travel.
Its vibrant blue sunray dial, magnificent blue and black ceramic bezel, polished steel case, and legible Super-LumiNova numerals and hands make it a statement piece. All three models are available on a steel bracelet or alligator strap with a double push-button folding clasp.
