December 30th is the birthday of the Queen of Punk, Patti Smith.

Dec 30, 2013

Musician Patti Smith was born December 30, 1946, in Chicago, USA. She moved to New York in 1969 and met guitarist Lenny Kaye, with Patti reciting poetry and Kaye playing music. They then began performing in earnest as a five-piece band. Their 1975 debut album, "Horses," was highly acclaimed, particularly their cover of Van Morrison's "Gloria." Another hit was "Because the Night," co-written with Bruce Springsteen. In 1980, she married Fred Smith, a former member of the rock band MC5. Although she took a break from music for a while, she has consistently released music since the late 1990s. Last year she released her first autobiography and poetry collection, and in January of this year she performed in Japan.

She is known as the "Queen of Punk," and is not only the inspiration for her music, but also for designer brands such as ANN DEMEULEMEESTER and UNDERCOVER.
