To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse's reopening, the Yokohama Fruhlings Fest 2017 will be held from April 28th to May 7th, recreating a German spring festival.
The facility has strong ties to Germany, as some of its buildings were constructed in the German style and Yokohama Port is a sister port of the Port of Hamburg in northern Germany. This year's event is one of the events held throughout the year that originated in Germany.
"Fruhlings Fest" means "spring festival" in German, and the combination of a beer festival and a traveling amusement park has become a traditional way to enjoy a spring day across Germany.
This year's fifth edition will feature German beer and food, and the number of attractions has been increased to make it even more authentic. Of the seven attractions previously only available to children, the "Pirate Ship," which lets you feel like you're floating with a pendulum, and the "Lady Bird," a ladybug-shaped ride that spins, will be making their debut. There will also be attractions for adults and children to enjoy together, such as a family-sized merry-go-round. Drinks and food will include items familiar to German springtime, as well as traditional Hamburg cuisine, making their Japan debut. A limited-edition menu will include the "Domestic Spargel with Truffle-Aroma Hollandaise Sauce" (800 yen per bottle), a German springtime staple. Other items include the "Hamburger Laplaskaus" (700 yen), a local dish made with corned beef and potatoes, the "Einger Maibock" (1,100 yen), a high-alcohol beer that will be making its Japan debut, and the "Corn Shot" (800 yen), a vanilla-flavored hybrid dessert that will also be available for the first time at this event. In addition to fresh orange juice (600 yen) and pineapple juice (1,300 yen) made with churned fresh fruit pulp, there will also be a wide variety of meat dishes such as classic German sausages, sweet breads like pretzels, and sweet treats like ice cream.
