Showa Cafe opens at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi in collaboration with director Yoji Yamada's "The Little House"

Jan 8, 2014

On January 8th, a new café, "Showa Modern Cafe - The Little House," opened on the first floor of the main building of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store in collaboration with the film "The Little House," which opens on the 25th. It's open until the 28th. On the opening day, a talk event featuring director Yoji Yamada and actress Haru Kuroki was held.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Kyoko Nakajima, winner of the 143rd Naoki Prize. The story depicts a love affair that took place in a small house in the suburbs of Tokyo in the early Showa period through the eyes of Taki, a maid working there, and moves back and forth between the Showa and Heisei eras. The Showa section of the film is set in the "Showa Modern" era, a time when a blend of Japanese and Western styles flourished from the Taisho period. The setting of the film, the red triangular-roofed house, the gramophone, the cigarette set, the teacups, and other trends of the time are perfectly recreated.

The café, located in the central hall on the first floor of the main building, is inspired by the Showa era of the film. Guests will be greeted by staff clad in aprons, who will offer nostalgic Showa-era sweets such as the "Mousse à la Mode (1,050 yen)" served in a swan-shaped dish, which also appears in the film. Props used in the film, such as kimonos, letters, toys, and tea sets, are on display, along with a red-roofed "little house" offering a glimpse into the interior of the time. The Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store, which celebrated its 100th anniversary since its completion, also appears in the film. During the talk event, Director Yamada reminisced, "When I was young, I would only go to a department store once or twice a year, and I would get excited the day before." Ms. Kuroki, who plays the maid Taki, said, "I'm very happy that a cafe that reflects the world of the film has been opened in this historic department store. I would personally love to visit." Regarding the film, Director Yamada said, "This is also my story. It is a vivid portrayal of life in the Showa era seen through the eyes of a young maid. It was a peaceful, calm and fashionable time before war approached. I hope it will be a film that people will go to the theater to see two or three times."
