Exhibition by international architectural firm Foster + Partners to be held in Roppongi

Dec 18, 2015

"Foster + Partners: Innovation in Urbanism and Architecture," the first exhibition in Japan by the international architectural design firm Foster + Partners, will run from January 1 to February 14, 2016, at the Sky Gallery in the Tokyo City View Observatory, Mori Tower, Roppongi Hills. Founded in 1967 by architect Norman Foster, Foster + Partners has completed 300 projects in 45 countries, creating numerous modern masterpieces, including the Reichstag, the new German parliament building in Berlin. The firm has also been involved in the construction of Grade I listed buildings, the highest level of protected architecture in the UK, equivalent to Japan's National Treasures. This exhibition, "Foster + Partners: The Art of Architecture," is a unique re-examination of the "Foster + Partners" exhibition, which has toured the United States and Asia since 2009. Approximately 50 of Foster + Partners' most representative projects will be showcased using a vast array of materials, including models, videos, CG, furniture, and products. The exhibition will showcase Foster + Partners' unique methods, which incorporate cutting-edge technology while respecting the historical background and local environment of traditional buildings, as seen in projects such as the Great Court at the British Museum. Projects that foreshadow the cities and architecture of the near future, such as Apple Campus 2, Apple's new headquarters, and a lunar home built with a 3D printer using lunar sand, will also be featured. Materials related to the 12-year collaborative project with Richard Buckminster Fuller, a leading 20th-century engineer and thinker, will also be on display. Other planned events include talk sessions and workshops. A discussion on the future of cities and architecture will be held on January 17 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, titled "Innovation in Cities and Architecture," and a children's workshop on "structures" will be held on January 24 from 10:00 PM to 12:30 PM. Gallery talks will be held from 2pm to 3pm on January 16th, from 7pm to 8pm on January 28th, and from 7pm to 8pm on February 4th, in which experts and museum staff will introduce the exhibition from their respective perspectives.
