A solo exhibition by documentary photographer Kazuyoshi Nomachi, who travels to places beyond the sky that no one has ever seen before

Jan 12, 2016

"Shore in the Sky," an exhibition of works by documentary photographer Kazuyoshi Nomachi, recipient of the Medal with Purple Ribbon, will open on January 15th at Gallery 916 in Tokyo's Minato Ward.

The exhibition features works from Nomachi's visit to Mexico, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina in early 2015. He traveled to extreme altitudes in search of landscapes and unknown sights that no photographer had ever photographed before, including the Santa Maria Tonantzintla Church, where he received special permission to photograph, the Uyuni Salt Flats during the rainy season, sand pillars towering in the wilderness at an altitude of 4,000 meters, and Argentina's Perito Moreno Glacier, known as a living glacier. Talk events are also scheduled to be held on January 17th and 31st at 2 PM. Kazuyoshi Nomachi became a freelance photographer in 1971. His journey to the Sahara Desert in 1972 led him to travel extensively across Africa, covering the Nile River Basin, Ethiopia, and the Great Rift Valley. In the late 1980s, he moved to the Middle East and Asia, focusing on China, Tibet, and Saudi Arabia. Since the 2000s, he has focused on the Andes, India, and Iran. His work has garnered attention through magazine appearances, exhibitions, and photobook publications around the world, resulting in the international co-publication of numerous photobooks, including "Sahara: Between Sky and Sand," "The Nile," "Tibet: Earth in Heaven," "Pilgrimage to Mecca," and "Pilgrimage on Earth." He has subsequently received numerous awards, including the Domon Ken Award, the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists, and the Photographic Society of Japan International Award. In 2009, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
