Van Cleef & Arpels embodies the essence of high jewelry in "Peau d'Anne"

Jan 29, 2016

The role of a high jewelry maison extends beyond fashion, even to the preservation of artistic culture. Established in 1906, Van Cleef & Arpels is one of Paris's most prestigious high jewelers. Since its founding, the brand has drawn inspiration from nature, couture, and dance, and more recently has adopted literary works as collection themes.

Fans eagerly await each year's high jewelry collection. The latest collection, "Peau d'Anne," just released in Japan, is themed around the classic fairy tale "The Donkey's Skin," written by the 17th-century French poet Charles Perrault. Van Cleef & Arpels also supported the digital restoration of the 1970s film adaptation of this tale, "The Donkey and the Princess," and the new high jewelry collection pays homage to both works. "The Donkey and the Princess" starred the legendary actress Catherine Deneuve. The poetic and magical world of the story and film, familiar to French people, are sublimated into works of art using gemstones. The "Peau d'Anne" collection expresses the unique world of donkey skin, leveraging the Maison's creativity and technical expertise. It's a dreamlike realm, born from the encounter between the sparkle of dazzling precious stones—diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, garnets, and rubies—and delicate craftsmanship at the level of art. The collection includes the "Miroir Enchanté" necklace, inspired by a hand mirror in which Peau d'Anne gazes upon herself in rapt ecstasy, as well as clips depicting chateaux, fairies, and colorful princess dresses. Alban Belloir, who has served as president of Van Cleef & Arpels Japan since last fall, spoke of his dedication to the collection, saying, "The high jewelry collection we release each year is the source of the Maison's creativity and innovation. Van Cleef & Arpels is indispensable without high jewelry." He sees the launch of the high jewelry collection as an excellent opportunity to convey the essence of the Maison, which has continued to innovate throughout its history.

Van Cleef & Arpels is always seeking modernity while preserving the authentic traditional culture of jewelry. The high jewelry collection can be said to be the crystallization of the Maison's universality and future potential.
