On January 13th, Kansai Yamamoto and writtenafterwards designer Yoshikazu Yamagata held a talk event at the TOKYO Kaihoku (Tokyo Liberation Zone) on the second floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building, a venue showcasing fashion born from the streets of Tokyo. From January 2nd to 14th, the store is holding a pop-up shop selling Kansai's clothing in a retail setting for the first time in approximately 20 years, where Yamagata is exhibiting and selling tribute pieces. One of the catalysts for the collaboration came when Kansai, who saw Yamagata's 2012 collection inspired by the Seven Lucky Gods, became captivated by Yamagata's talent. During the talk, Kansai, the first Japanese person to hold a show in the UK, and Yamagata, who graduated with honors from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in the UK, spoke about their thoughts on creating clothes on an international scale.
In response to a question from a visitor who works in the fashion industry about "What makes good clothes?", Yamagata replied, "Good clothes are clothes that reach the heart. I hope we can communicate our feelings through clothing." Kansai replied, "Fashion isn't just about dressing up with clothes, it's also about being flattered by them. I think good clothes are clothes that you think are good."
Also appearing at the event were fashion director and blogger Misha Janette, who designed tights and T-shirts in collaboration with Kansai for the pop-up event, and stylist Yasuko Takahashi, known as Yakko-san, who introduced Kansai's clothes to David Bowie.
