"SANAA" exhibition by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa to be held at Towada Art Center

To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the Towada Art Center will host the "Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa: SANAA Exhibition," by the internationally acclaimed architectural unit SANAA, from February 1st through March 30th.
The exhibition will introduce SANAA's activities as well as Sejima and Nishizawa's individual projects. Focusing on museum architecture they have worked on around the world, including the EPFL Learning Center, the Louvre-Lens, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, the exhibition will showcase the state of next-generation architecture and its relationship with local communities through approximately 40 models, drawings, and videos.
The exhibition's venue was designed by Ryue Nishizawa Architects, utilizing not only the special exhibition rooms but also lounge areas and corridors. Nishizawa also designed the museum.
On the first day, January 1st, there will be a talk show with Nishizawa and Sejima, followed by a reception featuring the two. The exhibition is limited to 30 people and admission is free (priority given to those with advance reservations). Additionally, on February 16th, a talk session will be held with Nishizawa and musician Yoshihide Otomo, known for his work on "Orchestra Aoi Mori!" and the 2013 NHK morning drama "Amachan." Otomo is also scheduled to perform a special live concert, "OTOMO YOSHIHIDE Special Live in TOWADA," for ¥2,000, including one drink. Various other events are also planned. Kazuyo Sejima was born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1956. She graduated from Japan Women's University Graduate School in 1981. After working at Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects, she established Kazuyo Sejima & Associates in 1987. Ryue Nishizawa was born in Tokyo in 1966. After completing a master's degree at Yokohama National University Graduate School in 1990, he joined Kazuyo Sejima & Associates. In 1995, he co-founded the architectural unit SANAA with Kazuyo Sejima. In 1997, they established Ryue Nishizawa & Associates. He currently serves as a professor at Yokohama National University Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design (Y-GSA).
SANAA is involved not only in architecture but also in interior design, urban planning, furniture design, etc., and has won numerous awards, including the Golden Lion at the 9th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale and the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
